A Brief History Of The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF).
The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006 by the African Union and UNESCO to promote the conservation and protection of Africa’s cultural and natural heritage of Outstanding Universal Value. Its primary mission is to support African States Parties in implementing the 1972 World Heritage Convention, addressing key challenges such as the underrepresentation of African sites on the World Heritage List and the need for improved conservation and management.
In 2010, the AWHF became a UNESCO Category II Centre, making it an official and strategic partner of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre and the Advisory Bodies of the World Heritage Committee (ICOMOS, ICCROM, and IUCN). The Fund is hosted by the Government of South Africa on behalf of the African continent.
The AWHF collaborates closely with the African Union, aligning its efforts with UNESCO’s Priority Africa and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Its support to African States Parties focuses on:
- Increasing the number of African sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.
- Providing technical and financial assistance to enhance the conservation and management of World Heritage properties, including efforts to remove sites from the List of World Heritage in Danger.
